Steam and pedal power take Qserv directors from end to end

May 2008 Two directors from Qserv, the specialist well, pipeline and process service company headquartered in Aberdeen, are participating in a challenging End to End trek to raise money for Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Mike Dreelan will be using an unusual mode of transport to complete the John o’ Groats to Lands End route. He and a small group of enthusiasts will be making the journey on a 1912 Burrell Gold Medal steam engine, emulating Jack Wakefield Snr and Jnr who originally completed the arduous trail in a similar fashion 44 years ago. Ciaran Dreelan will be using pedal power to complete the journey of almost 1,000 miles,

The donations raised for Starlight Children’s Foundation will be used to help children in the Aberdeen area who are affected by serious or terminal illness. The charity grants ‘wishes’ to fulfil the dreams of children it helps in an effort to take their minds off their illness and help strengthen family bonds during difficult times.

Mike and Ciaran’s journey starts on 12 July from John o’ Groats. They will be mirroring the route taken by Jack Wakefield Snr and Jnr in 1964 and hope to emulate the success of the seven day record. The trip will see them pass through Inverness and Stirling, then on to Carlisle, Northwich, Bristol, Exeter and finishing at Lands End.

Qserv engineering director, Mike Dreelan, said: “The history of the 1912 Burrell Gold Medal steam engine has always fascinated me. Being able to ride it across the length of the country while raising funds for charity is great. Starlight brings happiness to children across Aberdeen and if the money we raise can help even one child then it will have been worth all our efforts.”

Qserv well services director, Ciaran Dreelan, said: “This is a great opportunity to raise funds for a charity that carries out invaluable work for children and their families in Aberdeen. We have been preparing for this for the past six months and I am confident that the donations raised will make it worthwhile.

“Even for a keen cyclist this is a challenging proposition but I know it’s nothing compared to what the children Starlight help have to deal with. The funds raised will be of great benefit to the charity and this will spur Mike and myself on to complete the challenge.

“Our colleagues at Qserv have been extremely generous with their donations and I urge others to do the same.”
